The new look of a business in 2010
The new look of a business in 2010

You don't need a storefront to have a business.
You no longer are doing business in your community ... you are now global!
You do not need a LAN line ... old phone your parents had that hung on the wall attached to a cord.
You don't need a logo.
You don't even need to be an expert in what you do. that's scary...
The one thing you need is a website.

Coal in this company's stocking BAH HUMBUG!

"Dear SEO Customer,

Your monthly activity is available to review.
While in your account, please  review your profile content to ensure it is complete.  Keep your profile up to date - the more information you put in your profile, the higher you're likely to rank in local and major search engine results (and more likely to be chosen by someone searching)." This Scrooge wants you to get additional hits and you will pay for them.  Shame on them, they are marketing themselves as the expert in this field.  They promise they will do all the work for you. Yet they clearly are holding you responsible ... great escape clause for them when you don't get the hits they promised ...  oh, you didn't read that last sentence?  Bah Humbug!

This company is charging initial set-up fees, monthly fees, and charging you for the words they want you to include! How many companies are charging for this service, which I handle for my clients as they cannot be expected to understand this complex process and understand the lingo spoken? How many "Dear Santa letters" do you receive asking for help on this subject?

This company is claiming to be the best Search Engine Optimization and Pay Per Click company
.
Who is the Scrooge behind this company?  BTW -You also have a contract with the Grinch for the same thing! You didn't know as you were pressured and uneducated.

Organic, custom designed Search Engine Optimization custom designed for your website are legitimate. You no longer have to work with Scrooge or Grinch as you don't feel educated.  Cut your loses NOW.  I will be happy to advise you on this ways you can be wiser in your company's budget for 2010!  Cathe

DowneySidekc.org Adoption for older children

I met Cheryl Graves at a network group of Professional Women.  Downey Side Adoption KC was having a silent / live auction fund-raiser last month.  www.DowneySidekc.org  cgraves@DowneySide.org   I met with the person who bid on the time I had donated for the auction.  My job allows me to meet the best people who are doing remarkable things just because "it should be this way".  I just want to educate everyone about websites so you can make the correct decision.  I have the honor of working with Downey Side Adoption in 2010.

Cathe:

Thank you very much for all the advice you shared with me.  I went home and immediately bought domain names from Register.com.  Since I decided to create a website a couple of months ago, I have done a lot of research on-line and solicited advice from many individuals.  For pure, concentrated usefulness, the two hours with you were the best. I really appreciate your help.  Thank you very much.  Mrs. C

Mrs. C will have a wonderul program for non-profits.  It's great when everyone cares, shares and gives.  Cathe

Wishing for a new website from Santa?

Your website forms the world's first impression of you and your business!

  • Does your website open within seconds?
  • Is your website content accurate?
  • Are you getting results on your website?
  • How can you check to view the hits?
  • Are your website content and your marketing materials consistent?

If your answers to the above questions are not positive then you should consider making a positive change for 2010.

My website is being held hostage!

Many people are very savvy that they need to have a website.  Number 1:  purchase your domain name yourself.  When I work with a client, I will help you create a domain name, I will help you transfer your domain name, AND YOU ARE THE OWNER OF THE DOMAIN NAME … not me.  Do not let anyone purchase your domain for you.  However, some times domain names are sold to resellers with out your knowledge.  They then are the owner of your domain name.  You may have purchased from a legitimate site … their business practices may have changed.  For over 6 years I have transferred domain names for clients.  A client of mine was very patient, much more patient than I, with a local hosting company reseller would not release the domain name after 6 weeks.  Legally, the transfer process can only take 5-8 business days.  There are only 6 laws that govern websites.  When you purchase a domain name, legally your domain cannot be transferred for 60 days.  This is for your protection.   If you want a biz domain and website, if you are exchanging money or accepting donations, please use www.Register.com. I’m not a reseller for Register.com.  I’m a free-lance webmaster.  I always provide a free consultation.  I smiled when I sat down with someone new and I had ran a Who Is and knew if they legally owned their domain or not.  Tip of the Day:  purchase your domain name yourself.  Contact me if you have any questions.  Cathe

I'm so frustrated with my website Tip of the Day

Those are the first words I hear when I meet with a potential client, when I'm networking and I've told them I am a web master and when someone calls me as you referred them to me.  Thank You!

The purpose of my website is to educate you.  It’s full of information for you.  I want to provide information so you are better educated when you interview your potential web master.  A web master is highly skilled in the latest technology to
ensure your website loads quickly … and that only begins when you are wanting a new website or website make-over.

Ok, you need a website designed.  Then what?  Who is your website designer?  A website designer is a designer.  That is their expertise.  This is one part of the process.  I hope you're researching everyone.  With today’s work situation, the best IT provider is that … Their expertise is IT support. While I am a web master, I’m not qualified to do my own IT support. Unfortunately, the website Industry has a bad image. Most of my clients come away from using someone who needed quick income.  Please check out my website for questions you should ask.  Also another tip:  check out their website.  If it’s blank and says coming soon … not a good sign.  No Portfolio or testimonials.
Look at the email address.  Is it yahoo or gmail ... not a good sign.

Now who are you going to use to get your website launched to the Internet? I will go into the remaining steps your website will need to follow to get your hits in my daily Blog.

Tip of the Day …  a bad website is harmful to your biz!  I’d rather see website coming soon … more importantly so would those clients you lost with a website that does not work!

loneliness can be as painful as hunger, companionship as powerful as love

I hope there is food at your family dinner tomorrow.  I hope you have family and friends surrounding your table.

Thanksgiving was always at my house to give mom a break as we are a large Irish Catholic Family.  The Thanksgiving Day the Chiefs played on national TV, I had kid movies in another room, a family, very competitive game of Spoons in the Kitchen.  I thought my family would sleep over~

We lost my grandmother just a few days later.  My mom has been gone 5 years, but I still get ready to share with her what her Grandsons have done today.
I always did that Southern Johnson County thing; I donated to the bell ringers, I donated food to the Harvesters Barrels at the store. I always donated to those non-profits who came to my house to pick up the clothes that I had outgrown. Office attire very pretty but not warm and not comfortable. I headed the United Way at work for a few years.  Keep me in my comfort zone. My son came home from 7th grade and informed me homeless people can’t open jars. Homeless people need protein.  I then began to donate Peanut Butter and Crackers.

Homeless or those in need of a warm meal are no longer defined as winos who should pull themselves up by their boot straps.  Its families at church not wanting to share with anyone they may be loose that huge house.  Over 80% of Johnson County students are using free and reduce lunches while their parents try to pay the heating bill over the mortgage. It’s those that have lost a job, lost their home, its OUR BRAVE vets who served so you can celebrate this Thanksgiving who have Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.

Thank those homeless BRAVE vets, as you pray over your Thanksgiving Dinner.  Thank the Heroes, who are angels on earth, having dinner with those who are homeless or in need of a free meal. Those who are lonely and feel this is their family.  They don’t judge. They treat everyone with respect and dignity.  The homeless live the golden rule.  They encourage. They are such a strong support for each other.  The Heroes do this on a daily basis.  They do it knowing they are being exposed to germs as the homeless or those needing a warm meal don’t have health insurance.

A local food kitchen mission: to provide a pleasant, safe place for the hungry or lonely to share a free, nutritious meal and the companionship of one another. We believe loneliness can be as painful as hunger, companionship as powerful as love. Anyone who desires a meal is served, no questions asked. Diners are treated as our invited guests. We do not provide counseling, but rather refer individuals to appropriate agencies when they ask for help. Our focus is on food and fellowship.I wish you a Blessed Thanksgiving rich with food and fellowship.  Cathe

Own your domain name? Probably Not!
Being a webmaster for over 6 years, I thought I had heard every reason why a hosting company would not release a domain name and/or website.  We started the transfer process 6 weeks ago.  Today, a manager, forgetting he was walking to me the new webmaster and not the client, said We own this domain name and we lease it to you.  In this case NOT! But it could be true in your case.  Do you own the domain name … sometimes not!

Picture and standard website file formats
I get questions on this all the time.  I hope this will help you.

Please keep this and refer or forward to anyone who does your pictures, ads, etc.
What you use in print is different in what you use for website.  These professionals realize your website needs a different size.  If you load the .jpeg (pictures) they share with you, your website would take too long to load.  A client will not wait for a website to load.  They move away from your website and miss the new fresh information you are sharing!

Here are standard website file formats.  There should be no cost to you.

Logo:
You will need a transparent .jpeg file for your website.

Pictures:
You need all pictures / graphics in a .jpeg file format. The pictures you take with your camera are fine. If the pictures are taken in high-resolution, you will need that .jpeg resized for the website recommended standard size 60 x 80 kb. This is the standard website file format.

Video: Purchase a camera with video/audio so your clients can hear and watch how you install, measure, etc. This is a business expense.

On the vendor end, there are many different files formats they may use. You will need one of these file types:.avi.mov.mpg.mpeg.  These are the standard website file formats.YouTube videos work as well.

Audio:
Purchase a camera with video/audio so your clients can hear and watch how you install, measure,  etc. This is a business expense. You will need audio in an .mp3 file format.

On the vendor end, there are many different files formats they may use.
The standard website file format is .mp3 file format.

Flash / Animation: On the vendor end, there are many different files formats they may use.You will need a .swf file format. The standard website file format is .swf.

I hope this helps you.  Cathe

I remembered the Firefighters on 9-11 who climbed 70 steps of stairs on 9-11 searching for survivors. He finished the run.

An emotional run on yesterday, meeting family members who lost a loved one while 400 did the run. Seeing the pride of active / vets with Army, Navy and other all forces. Olathe Fire and Police cheering the runners on. A woman, 96, who had run and stayed around to support runners.  A fantastic job to the committee / volunteers and the 200 Army members who ran overseas.  The respect, the way everyone helped to make sure the race was full of Energy, The runners crossing the finish line, 9 hours and 11 minutes, under Large American Flags on both sides of the track with the bodies aching, some injured, but, oh you missed seeing the look of accomplishment they had endured.  One man said to me, as I was concerned about him, at the end of the race, he said, every time I passed you on a lap, tired, aching, I remembered the Firefighters on 9-11 who climbed 70 steps of stairs on 9-11 searching for survivors.  Great job!!!  Thank you for allowing me to share the day with you!

9-11 Patriot’s Run today

I cried through the ceremony.  It was very touching to see how many active / veterans were at the dinner and will do the run.  There was a table presentation “The Missing Warrior” by Captain Mark Bicskei.  It was to remind us of those heroes who are not here on this day of Remembrance.  The Captain did share he is with the Reservist Unit in Gardner and just brought home ALL 293 heroes just last week from a year’s deployment.

I heard my friend Roger, who led 3 deployments, speak quietly, proudly, and respectfully … “Amazing job” before the Captain’s standing ovation.

I was a guest at the Salvation’s Army fundraising dinner last night for the 9-11 Patriot’s Run today … actually started last night as some local runners did laps overnight as our troops in Afghanistan were running the 9 hour 11 minute run on 9-11 their time.

My friends, Roger and Dana Ward, have shared their stories of 9-11; Roger’s 3 deployments in 5 years and Dana being in the National Guard.  I am humbled and full of new respect at what they have over-come as most vets choose not to share their stories.  And Dana’s passion not to forget those serving, and oh yes, those family members at home.

I heard Major Marstsolf share this as one of the examples of 9-11.  The Salvation Army had one tent with 25 donated reclining chairs.  A female Salvation Army Captain and her volunteers had one task on 9-11 at Ground Zero while the recovery was taking place amidst the smoke, crashing buildings and fire.

The Fire Department, part of the First Responders team, were getting overheated while tenderly bringing Survivors out of the rumble.  As they took 15 minute breaks, the Firefighters were brought to this tent.  This Salvation Army tent had one purpose: to help the firefighters tenderly remove their steamy, hot black rubber boots charred and burned, from their swollen feet.  They removed the hot sweaty dirty socks. To bathe their feet in clean, cool water, blistered and swollen. Then they put fresh socks on, helping put those boots back on as the fireman returned to Ground Zero searching for more Survivors.

Rep. Joe Wilson's outburst “You Lie”

With mixed feelings, I finished my work for the day to give my full attention to President Obama’s speech on Health Care.  This issue has been a part of my life as a freelance web master, as I watched my father spend retirement funds to allow my mother to deal with dignity and pride, as only my mom could do, with one of the worst diseases and a very long illness.

As a parent who has guilt that my children have to deal with the alcoholic gene and its negative results if inherited.  And for all those I love who suffer with Mental Illness; depression, anxiety, those undiagnosed due to their mental illness, and those with Paranoid Schizophrenia.  I’m listening intensely to the President as a female biz owner, a mother, a grandmother.

Did I just hear what I thought I heard?  Rep. Joe Wilson's outburst “You Lie” to President Obama while he is still giving his speech.  The President, the honor and respect due to his office, had not finished his speech. As a biz owner, if I ever interrupt you, you need to find another web master.  We all learned to wait, show respect while listening, and then speak privately if you disagree!

This didn’t happen at my dinner table with my kids and their friends. What’s with the body language?  If I do that as a biz owner, you need to find someone else.  Pushing the envelope to the edge last night knowing the press would cover their silent protest?  Do I want someone like that as my choice in the Senate or House? No.

This grandmother has 3 books sitting next to my bed, 2 by Dr Seuss and Surviving Schizophrenia. Perhaps if all the Congress and Senate were removed of the elite health care created by them for them, and had to deal with my live for 6 weeks, where are the places they would go?

Or how about living the life of a hero who returns from war with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, missing limbs and brain injuries as we celebrate Patriot’s Day tomorrow.  We owe more to our active military, veterans and their families.

What happened to respect and self-control?  Actions speak more loudly than words. Our small children, our students, our military see this as the actions of a member of the Senate or House!
